As the Municipal Guard reports, on Tuesday at noon, a woman ran into the Municipal Guard headquarters asking for help. She informed the duty officer that near the guard station she had noticed a bicycle left in the middle of the pavement and a man standing by a fence who was staggering on his feet and breathing heavily.
The man was very pale and extremely weak. During a conversation with the guards, he said that he suffered from diabetes and had become faint on his way home from the pharmacy. He was embarrassed to ask people for help, saying that he would rest for a while longer and somehow make it home. However, he could not remain standing. The sick man was escorted to the guard headquarters.
“We called an ambulance,” reports Mirosław Giedrojć, the guard commander. “After recording the man’s personal details, the ambulance dispatcher stated that he was known to them, suffered severe attacks of the illness, and advised giving him a drink containing a large amount of sugar until the ambulance arrived. We thank the woman who did not pass indifferently by a person in need of help and informed us about the situation,” the commander adds.
After receiving professional assistance and the appropriate medication from the ambulance crew, the 82-year-old man recovered and was able to return home.
The municipal guards appeal: not every person lying down or staggering is a “drunk.” Let us remember that even someone under the influence of alcohol may lose consciousness for another reason. In a situation involving a direct threat to life, we should not hesitate to provide assistance.
