At the Orzeł Cultural Integration Centre and at the headquarters of the Municipal Public Library (MBP) on Sądowa Street, ceremonies were held to mark 70 years of the library’s activity. Guests were welcomed by MBP director Halina Majewska, who honoured the institution’s former heads and warmly thanked the staff.

Congratulating the staff and the director, the mayor spoke about moving the library to a new headquarters, which is to be built on the site of the now-disused Mieszko Department Store building.

One of the programme items during the Jubilee was a film showing selected events held at the library. You can find coverage of most of them on our portal. Worth mentioning are our extensive reports on meetings with Manuela Gretkowska "Polish Muslim Terrorist", Jacek Dehnel, Jacek Pałkiewicz "Source of Dreams", Grzegorz Miecugow "Miecugow Would Come to Gliniada", Marek Krajewski "I Am My Hero", and Elżbieta Dzikowska "Where They Make Stamps".

During the celebrations, local authors who had presented their work at the library were also thanked. Our journalist Grażyna Hanaf received such thanks.

Let us recall that the Municipal Public Library was established on 27 November 1945 as the first library institution in Bolesławiec and the third in Lower Silesia. In 1995, on the occasion of its 50th anniversary, it was named after Cyprian Kamil Norwid. It has occupied its current headquarters in the building at 8 Sądowa Street since 1993. The building houses the Lending Library, Reading Room, Children’s and Youth Department, Phonographic Department together with the Talking Book collection, and the “Format” Gallery. The city’s only branch is located on Staroszkolna Street. The collections total approximately 130,000 volumes, while the number of readers is around 13,000, representing approximately 30% of Bolesławiec’s population.
