A 17-year-old took part in a multiplayer game played over the internet. During the game, players could obtain virtual items to equip their characters with, and which could also be sold through online auctions. These included virtual knives, weapons and combat equipment for game characters.
The detained individual bought items from other players at these auctions—items they had obtained during the game—without paying them. He sent them fake bank transfer confirmations by email, thereby gaining access to the items online.
Police identified more than a dozen victims from across the country. The losses suffered by the other players are estimated at more than PLN 10,000.
The detainee was placed in police custody. He faces up to eight years in prison.
