In 2014, the project received the prestigious Franz Bobzien Award. Forty students from the Jan Paweł II Public Communal Lower Secondary School in Sulików and Johanna-Eck-Schule in Berlin will continue the cleanup work begun by their peers in previous years on the grounds of the former Stalag VIII A prisoner-of-war camp. An important part of the project involves cleanup work in the cemetery of Soviet prisoners of war. In addition, the participants are independently creating clay plaques commemorating the deceased camp prisoners by name.
Each year, through minor maintenance and repair work at the Stalag, the participants make a major contribution to keeping this important memorial site in proper order. The young people learn about and “experience” history on site, which gives them an impetus to act responsibly and thoughtfully in the future.
During the week spent together in the twin town of Zgorzelec-Görlitz and at the school in Sulików, the participants have an exceptional opportunity to get to know one another, integrate and jointly learn about the history of Europe. These experiences provide a foundation for building a shared future in a new, open Europe.
The project closing ceremony will take place on Friday, 16 October 2015, at 9:30 a.m., at the site of the former Stalag VIII A prisoner-of-war camp (cemetery)
The project is being carried out with the support of Sulików Commune Head Robert Starzyński, director of the Primary and Lower Secondary School Complex in Sulików Jan Majowski, Soley Areca, MPGK Zgorzelec, Zgorzelec Commune, the Polish-German Youth Office, the Euroregion Neiße-Nisa-Nysa, Stiftung Gedenken und Frieden and the Meetingpoint Music Messiaen European Educational and Cultural Centre.
