Events held under the patronage of the Mayor of Legnica took place on Tuesday (22 September) at the training pitches complex in the Municipal Park. The Games were opened by Deputy Mayor Dorota Purgal, who wished the participants wonderful experiences and a great time.
It was a great celebration for children and young people. Half a thousand disabled pupils and participants from care facilities, special schools, preschools and occupational therapy workshops came to the stadium from the Legnica region. They competed, among other events, in bowling, wheelchair slalom, medicine-ball throwing, archery and races.
– For these athletes, this is a true celebration, says Marek Szymczyk, a rehabilitation specialist at the Integration Schools Complex in Legnica. – While preparing for the competition, they motivate themselves to exercise. They test themselves during the events. They win medals that are great trophies for them. And above all, they can leave home and have a great time.
Aleksander from the third grade of the lower secondary school at ZSI is taking part in the Paralympics for the third time. – For me, this is a competition full of fun, adds the teenage athlete.
Kazimierz Pleśniak, president of the Legnica branch of the Society of Friends of Children, stresses that the Paralympics take place thanks to the support of local governments, mainly the Legnica authorities, and sponsors.
Sporting competition was not the only attraction of the event. There were also artistic performances, lotteries and refreshments for the participants. MKS “Miedź Legnica” Sports Club, together with the “Tylko Miedź” Supporters’ Association, joined the organisation of the event for Paralympians.
The Legnica TPD Paralympics is a major sporting event that has become a permanent fixture in our city’s cultural and sporting calendar. Around 500 disabled athletes from six counties—Legnica, Lubin, Jawor, Polkowice, Głogów and Złotoryja—take part every year, and the aim of the Paralympics is to enable everyone, without exception, to test their strength in sporting challenges suited to their abilities.
