About the tower
Renovated in July 2010, the tower was connected to Zgorzelec’s water supply network at the beginning of the 1970s, when the Water Treatment Plant at E. Orzeszkowej Street in Zgorzelec was commissioned in 1974. Its structure consists of three cylindrical reinforced-concrete shafts, each 4.2 m in diameter and 28.55 m high, connected by a glass-enclosed staircase.
The reinforced-concrete shafts contain three cylindrical steel water tanks, each with a capacity of 260 m³, because the primary purpose of the Zgorzelec tower on Piękna Street is to store water and provide the city with an adequate reserve in the event of increased consumption, as well as to ensure sufficient water pressure in the water supply network.
Nearly 700 m³ of water stored in the tower’s tanks guarantees greater stability of water supplies to homes and, in the event of a failure in the water supply system, will allow the water company to maintain the continuity of technological processes and avoid having to shut off the city’s water supply.
Without the tower, managing the city’s water supply system would be much more difficult and would require complex monitoring and measuring equipment.
The tower also serves as a fire-protection reservoir. It is also a distinctive tourist attraction.
