The incident occurred at the end of December last year in one of the shops in Lubin. An unknown perpetrator entered the premises. When the shop assistant turned away and walked away from the counter, the man leaned over and tried to pull out the cash box containing the takings. He failed because the owner had anticipated such a possibility and secured the cash box against being removed from the drawer.
Criminal Department officers worked on the case. Based on the information they had gathered, they identified and detained the perpetrator. He turned out to be a 31-year-old resident of Lubin.
He explained to the officers that what prompted him to attempt the theft was that he thought there was... an opportunity. In addition, he was under the influence of alcohol. He assured them that he would never have thought of doing anything like that while sober.
The man pleaded guilty. He faces up to 5 years in prison.
