Registration at the Miedziowe Centrum Zdrowia Medical Clinic in Legnica continued throughout July. The examinations began on 1 August. They are conducted on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Approximately 60 men underwent them over the course of two days.

“Until now, men’s prostate problems were rather a very embarrassing matter. People went to the doctor only as a last resort,” says one of the patients, Mr Stanisław. “I was persuaded to undergo the examinations by the city’s PROSTAta sprawa promotional campaign. It spoke openly about men’s ailments, but also with humour. President Krzakowski encouraged men to get tested by sticking a moustache on himself.

The programme will continue until the end of October. During this time, doctors are providing free PSA and urinary tract ultrasound examinations, digital rectal examinations and professional advice.

Prostate cancer is the most common malignant tumour among men in developed countries. It is diagnosed mainly in men over 50. Data from the Lower Silesian Cancer Registry for 2012 show that more than 200 new cases of prostate cancer were recorded in Legnica. The highest incidence was found among men aged between 50 and 69.

This is the age range included in Legnica’s prevention programme. Its implementation costs PLN 89,100. The city found a partner in the KGHM Polska Miedź Foundation, which co-financed the project with PLN 70,000.
