Eleven years after the previous city development strategy was last updated, the authorities of Zawidów have begun work on a new document. “The Zawidów development strategy is the city's most important planning document,” explains mayor Robert Łężny. “Investments included in the strategy have the greatest chance of being carried out and receiving EU funding. That is why it is important for as many projects as possible to be included in the strategy. We will consult our ideas with residents. Investments proposed by residents will also be included in this document. We want the strategy not to be a dead document, but rather a kind of map that will guide us in a specific direction.”
The city's new strategy is being prepared by the Gdańsk-based company EU-Consult. The first consultations on the matter took place in May. Social organizations, local entrepreneurs, housing communities and city councillors submitted their comments and proposals for projects to be included in the strategy.
During the two-day meeting, working groups made up of invited residents identified the city's strengths and weaknesses. They considered Zawidów's location near the border to be its greatest asset. The groups of residents also appreciated access to excellent educational, sports and cultural facilities.
According to the working groups, however, the city's major problems include the migration of young people, neglected post-industrial sites with unresolved legal status, the technical condition of Zawidów's market square, a shortage of skilled workers and the lack of an activity zone for microentrepreneurs.
Experts in planning from Gdańsk will organize the next meetings in August. This time, Zawidów residents will be invited to the consultations. “Every resident will be able to speak about projects for the city's strategy and talk about their expectations and needs. It is worth talking,” the mayor assures.
