The ceremony will take place on June 14 (Sunday) at 2:00 p.m. in the park in Iwiny. The program includes, among other things, a photography exhibition from that period and a meeting with residents affected by the tragedy.
Sebastian Zielonka about the disaster:
On December 13, 1967, a tragic construction disaster occurred in the village of Iwiny. At the Konrad mine, the embankment of a flotation-tailings reservoir failed. At 3:15 a.m., more than 12 million m³ of water and mud swept over the sleeping village. Eighteen residents died in the disaster, including a five-person family. Homes and farm buildings were destroyed.
The tragedy caused enormous material losses and led to the contamination of local farmland and gardens. The scale of the destruction is shown in photographs, which also demonstrate how powerless people are in the face of the forces of nature.
