This year, 130 soldiers and former soldiers took part in a shooting competition dedicated to the memory of Maj. Jacek Kostecki, a doctor who was killed while serving during the third rotation in Iraq. Members of the Association of the Wounded and Injured in Missions Outside the Country competed in shooting with a .22 sporting rifle, a military pistol and the 1996 Beryl rifle.

In the last of these events, Corporal Arkadiusz Polewski, a veteran and soldier of the 23rd Artillery Regiment, demonstrated a high level of accuracy and took third place on the podium. During his service in the Polish Military Contingent in Iraq, Corporal Polewski suffered a spinal injury, but after a lengthy recovery he returned to military service. He currently serves in the educational section of the Bolesławiec regiment.

“Despite the passage of time, the skills and habits developed during military service are not forgotten. I am not currently taking part in shooting training because my health limitations prevent me from doing so, but I wanted to prove that a veteran is a fully capable soldier, able to defend the country when the need arises,” says Corporal Polewski.

During the second rotation of the Polish Military Contingent in Iraq, A. Polewski served in a reconnaissance company as a gunner-reconnaissance soldier. Among other things, he took part in the Battle of City Hall in Karbala during the 2004 uprising of Muqtada al-Sadr.
