A duty officer from the Railway Protection Guard Post in Węgliniec received information that an abandoned Volkswagen passenger car was located on the Bolesławiec–Zebrzydowa railway line. Railway Protection Guard officers were sent to the scene and found freshly dug holes in the ground near the vehicle. A cut telecommunications cable protruded from one of them, with a steel cable attached to it. A metal-cutting saw was secured near the car, and the incident was reported to the Bolesławiec District Police Headquarters.
Police officers from Nowogrodziec established the vehicle’s owner. In the car’s boot, Railway Protection Guard and police officers found 12 metres of telecommunications cable stolen from the railway line, cut into 8 sections, as well as a jack used to pull cables out of the ground.
The detained 23-year-old resident of Nowa Wieś confessed to the theft. It turned out that the man had left the car by the railway line because its battery had run down.
The case was taken up by police officers from Nowogrodziec. The 23-year-old could face up to 8 years in prison.
