The only five-member quartet in Poland, and perhaps in the world, currently focuses primarily on its own songs. However, from the very beginning of its activity, it has included its own arrangements of songs by Jacek Kaczmarski, the Kaczmarski-Gintrowski-Łapiński trio, and all of Stanisław Staszewski’s songs. The group also performs songs by Georges Brassens (in translations by Wojciech Młynarski), as well as Nick Cave and Tom Waits in original translations by Przemysław Lembicz.
A characteristic feature of the Quartet is its rich arrangements, which, in addition to the basic instrumentation, also include double bass, accordion, mandolin, various percussion instruments and, since 2012, drums. In its original work, the group creates music for poems by, among others, Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński, Jacek Kaczmarski and Krzysztof Gajda.
During its more than 13 years of activity, the Quartet has played over 600 concerts throughout Poland and abroad (Germany and Ukraine). It has performed, among others, alongside Bob Geldof, Kazik Staszewski, Renata Przemyk, Przemysław Gintrowski, Jacek Bończyk, Kuba Sienkiewicz, Dr Yry, Mirosław Czyżykiewicz, Grzegorz Tomczak and Zespół Reprezentacyjny.
In March 2012, the Quartet invited Kazik Staszewski, the vocalist of the band Kult, to perform together a dozen or so songs written by Stanisław Staszewski at one of its concerts. This project, also initially intended to be a one-off event, led to the creation of a joint concert programme consisting of songs by “Dad” and several of Kazik’s songs, rarely or never performed live, followed by further concerts in this line-up and, ultimately, the creation of the full-fledged Kazik & Kwartet ProForma project.
The line-up consists of six members:
- Kazik Staszewski – vocals
- Przemysław Lembicz – guitar, vocals
- Piotr Lembicz – guitars
- Wojciech Strzelecki – double bass, bass guitar, vocals
- Marcin Żmuda – keyboards, vocals
- Marek Wawrzyniak – drums.
