Following the Holy Mass, Mayor Marcin Zawiła, together with Deputy Mayor Jerzy Łużniak, officially unveiled a plaque dedicated to the Lviv soldiers of the Home Army’s “Warta” partisan group. After the war, the partisans came to Jelenia Góra and established underground structures of the “Freedom and Independence” association here. After capturing Lviv and avoiding arrest by the Soviets, these soldiers first fled to the Rzeszów region and then to the so-called Recovered Territories. The Cursed Soldiers began publishing the underground WiN newspaper, “Wolność”. After a year of activity, they were arrested by the Security Office.
The granite cross was funded by Julian Pyrzanowski, while the decorated, hand-forged WiN Memorial Cross was made by Jelenia Góra craftsman Adam Wolak.
Since 2011, 1 March has been a national holiday dedicated to the soldiers of the anti-communist armed underground. The National Cursed Soldiers Remembrance Day is observed annually. The first day of March is especially symbolic for the soldiers of the anti-communist underground: on that day in 1951, death sentences were carried out on the leadership of the Fourth Command of the “Freedom and Independence” association.
