In recent months, a new type of service has appeared on the Bolesławiec market—care provided by a professional medical caregiver. A medical caregiver is a person who professionally helps an ill and dependent person meet their basic daily needs. This is a new medical profession (since 2008), and it has been included in the classification of occupations and specializations for the needs of the labor market—in accordance with the Regulation of the Minister of Labour and Social Policy of 27 April 2010 on the classification of occupations and specializations for the needs of the labor market and the scope of its application (Journal of Laws of 17 May 2010).
The Opiekun Medyczny company is run by Maria Szawłowska, an experienced and qualified caregiver for elderly, ill and dependent people. Services include caregiving, hygiene and personal-care assistance in patients’ homes. Ms. Maria cares for people of different ages and at different stages of illness. During her years of working with dependent people, she has helped, among others, people with Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease, as well as people after road accidents and strokes and those in the advanced stages of cancer. She approaches each patient individually, determining the patient’s needs and the form of assistance together with their family. Daily care, care on agreed days and at agreed times, or a one-time visit are all possible.
The services provided include:
- Personal-care and hygiene procedures: daily washing and grooming, full-body washing, washing the patient in bed, changing ostomy bags, and changing underwear and bed linen
- Scheduling medical appointments and transporting patients to the doctor and to rehabilitation
- Assistance in dealings with various institutions
- Daily blood-pressure measurement
- Blood-glucose measurement
- Providing appropriate therapy in accordance with the doctor’s recommendations
- Assistance with taking medication prescribed by the doctor
- Performing various household tasks: shopping, cooking, helping with meals, laundry and ironing
- Encouraging patients to become independent
- Organizing leisure time: walks and outings to the cinema or theater
