Police learned about the attempted theft on Wednesday morning. The thieves tore several copper sheets from the casing of the Millennium Cross, which stands in the square between Willowa and Lubańska streets. The scrap-metal thieves also damaged part of the nearby Red Army cemetery gate. However, they failed to take anything with them. They were probably frightened off by other people. Police collected traces from the damaged sheets that may prove useful in determining the thieves’ identities.
The Millennium Cross is the largest cross in the city. It was consecrated in September 2003. Immediately after it was built, a man tried to jump from it. Wednesday’s attempted theft was not the first. From time to time, various people try to tear the copper sheets from the cross’s casing and sell them for scrap.
