Well, we too will give this week a festive touch. There is no other way, since rehearsals for the preschoolers’ nativity play have been taking place here since Monday, and on Saturday Zgorzelec Mandolin Orchestra will perform Christmas tree melodies.

To keep things chronological, however, we invite everyone to the PozaNova cinema. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, we will screen the film “Brides,” directed by Tinatin Kajrishvili. This French-Georgian film tells the story of a woman who marries the father of her children. The ceremony is brief because the man (Goga) is in prison. By marrying him, Nutsa gains the right to visit her husband once a month. Her children do not want to accompany her on the monthly visits because their father has become a complete stranger to them. One day, at work, Nutsa meets a handsome man... Well, you know how it goes—the story becomes complicated... “Brides” will be shown at 6:31 p.m. Tickets cost PLN 11.

From Friday, and throughout the following week, we invite you to see Andrzej Wajda’s “The Promised Land.” It is one of the greatest Polish films, winner of numerous awards, led by the Golden Lions and an Oscar nomination. A cinematic feast that will satisfy even the most demanding film lovers. Music by Wojciech Kilar that conquered the world. The waltz from “The Promised Land” captured the heart of Francis Ford Coppola himself, who personally called Wojciech Kilar and later invited him to work with him in Hollywood on the film “Dracula.” So come to our PozaNova cinema. It is worth it!

On Tuesday, an important ceremony will take place beneath the green dome: at 12:00 p.m., a ceremonial session of the Zgorzelec City Council will be held, during which the mayor re-elected for the 2014–18 term, Rafał Gronicz, will take the oath of office.

On Wednesday, there will be more cinema screenings as part of the New Horizons Film Education project. Among those taking their seats before the silver screen will be students from Primary School No. 5 in Zgorzelec.

Also on Wednesday, there will be another meeting of the Cross-Border University of the Third Age. The subject of Ewa Szymańska’s lecture will be “The Forgotten Art of Letter Writing.” It starts at 11:00 a.m.

Also on Wednesday, we invite you to the ceremonial opening of an exhibition by artists associated with our “Under the Dome” art studio. The exhibition’s title—how could it be otherwise?—is “Christmas Is Coming…” We invite you to the Na Dole gallery at 4:00 p.m. The exhibition will also be on display in the MDK lobby.

On Thursday, we warmly invite you on behalf of the students and the principal of the Brothers Śniadecki General Secondary School in Zgorzelec. It is this Zgorzelec high school that is organizing the ninth Festival of Jacek Kaczmarski’s Creative Work. We highly recommend it—Thursday, 11 December, at 5:00 p.m.

Friday is rehearsal day here. The preschoolers will once again rehearse their nativity play, and Zgorzelec Mandolin Orchestra will rehearse as well. They have to perform flawlessly, especially since on Saturday (at 5:30 p.m. at the CSR on Maratońska Street) there will be a ceremonial Christmas tree concert, during which the Zgorzelec mandolin players will perform with such stars as Alicja Majewska, Włodzimierz Korcz, Olga Bończyk and Zbigniew Wodecki. The concert will conclude the celebrations of the ensemble’s 25th anniversary, and its culmination will be the orchestra’s ninth album, which will be given to the audience on this occasion. It features well-known and popular film themes as well as works by outstanding popular-music composers, including Cosma, Anderson, Borodin and Jarre… The orchestra recorded the material for its new album during summer music workshops at the RecPublica recording studio in Lubrza.

Tickets for the concert can be purchased at the Municipal Cultural Centre at 1 Parkowa Street and at the Sports and Recreation Centre at Maratońska Street. They cost PLN 20.
