Although the name includes the words Karkonoska Group, in reality the Group’s area of operation covers not only the Karkonosze Mountains but the entire Polish side of the Western Sudetes. According to the report on rescue operations and expeditions presented by the head of the Karkonoska GOPR Group, Sławomir Czubak, it is in the Izera Mountains that an increasing number of dangerous incidents occur. This is directly related to the development of cross-country skiing and cycling. The Izera Mountains have become a mecca for cyclists and cross-country skiing enthusiasts.
On the occasion of their special day, the rescuers received state decorations, distinctions and awards from local governments at all levels: regional, county and municipal, from across the Group’s area of operation. Among the rescuers from Szklarska Poręba, GOPR rescuer Zbigniew Bogaczyk was awarded the Gold Cross of Merit, while rescuers Marek Barzak and Tomasz Krotowski received the Silver Cross of Merit. The Mayor of Szklarska Poręba’s awards went to: Jerzy Busse, Tomasz Krotowski, Piotr Ałaszwski and Marcin Rutkowski.
