The Mayor of Legnica, the Active Rehabilitation Foundation “FAR” and the Sports and Recreation Centre invited all people with disabilities, their friends and families to the “From Integration to Active Rehabilitation” happening on 4 October. It was held at the skatepark on Cynkowa Street in Legnica. It is one of the few facilities in Poland specially adapted to the needs of people with disabilities.

The event attracted not only residents of Legnica. The reputation of the Legnica skatepark brought visitors from many cities: Wrocław, Jawor, Polkowice, Lubin, Oleśnica, and even distant Sandomierz. People with disabilities who use wheelchairs, aged from a few to several dozen years, came to the event.

– Disability cannot take away opportunities. You are proof of that, and Legnica is a city friendly to everyone – said Mayor Tadeusz Krzakowski, the founder of one of the first and best integrated schools in the region.

During the event, competitions were held in various sports, including wheelchair slalom, archery, boccia, an obstacle course and handbike riding. The best participants received trophies.

FAR instructors shared their expertise in selecting wheelchairs, wheelchair riding techniques, pressure sore prevention, and techniques for assisting and transferring people with disabilities. People without disabilities had the opportunity to complete the obstacle course in a wheelchair. – I am full of admiration for their determination and skills – said Anna Farmas-Czerwińska, a City Council member who successfully, though with difficulty, wheeled herself up the skatepark ramp.
