The annual events calendar includes at least three dates that may provide an opportunity to celebrate mature and older age.
- On June 15, we celebrate World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
- On October 1, we observe the International Day of Older Persons, established by the United Nations General Assembly.
- World Senior Citizens’ Day falls on November 14.
This year, seniors in Zgorzelec will celebrate for three days, as the official celebrations of World Senior Citizens’ Day will begin on Tuesday, October 7, and continue until Thursday, October 9.
The celebrations will begin with a march of seniors from the Sports and Recreation Center to the Municipal Cultural Center, where Mayor Rafał Gronicz will hand them symbolic keys to the City Gates, officially launching the three-day festivities.
The main event will be the Senior Citizens’ Artistic Achievements Review, during which they will present their skills and talents.
The opening of the “Hat of My Dreams” exhibition and the hobbyists’ exhibition also promises to be particularly interesting.
The Municipal Public Library in Zgorzelec will organize computer and Internet classes especially for seniors and will also officially open a permanent library collection for its somewhat older readers.
Zgorzelec’s PoZa NoVa Cinema will invite audiences to a screening of “Love Maneuvers,” which will undoubtedly bring to mind pre-war films telling beautiful love stories.
Remembering history and the fact that many seniors from Zgorzelec look back on the past with nostalgia, the program also includes a visit to the exceptional photographic exhibition “The Warsaw Uprising: On Its 70th Anniversary,” which opened last Sunday.
The organizers also remember that sport is a very important part of seniors’ lives and is becoming increasingly popular among them. Accordingly, seniors will have the opportunity to take part in Nordic walking and exercise under the supervision of professional instructors. With health in mind, 20 exhibitors from across Poland will launch the Healthy Senior Fair at the Municipal Cultural Center.
The Zgorzelec celebrations will conclude with the presentation of prizes and distinctions to seniors who took part in the “Hat of My Dreams” competition and the Artistic Review. The mayor, the Zgorzelec county head, the chairperson of the Senior Citizens’ Council and the director of the SKOK Stefczyka Branch in Zgorzelec will honor the winners.
Organizers: Zgorzelec City, the Zgorzelec Senior Citizens’ Council, the Municipal Public Library and the Municipal Cultural Center. The event is supported by the Zgorzelec County Office and the SKOK Stefczyka Zgorzelec Branch.
