The Eagle Monument Has Regained Its Former Splendour
A pleasant surprise awaits everyone who visits the Cemetery of Soldiers of the 2nd Polish Army in the near future. The city commissioned the cleaning of the Eagle Monument, restoring its appearance from years ago.
The funds for the necessary work were provided by the Lower Silesian Voivode (PLN 5,000) and the Council for the Protection of Sites of Struggle and Martyrdom (PLN 10,000), to which the city submitted an application in spring for funds for the comprehensive renovation of the cemetery. Cleaning the monument towering over the necropolis is an announcement of the work planned for the coming years to restore the cemetery.
The distinctive Zgorzelec monument depicting the Piast Eagle was created by Józef Potępa of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. The bronze casting of his sculpture was made by Gliwickie Zakłady Urządzeń Technicznych. The monument depicts an eagle that proudly looks towards the border on the Lusatian Neisse from the height of a pedestal symbolising a border post. Unveiled on 6 May 1978, it towers over the Cemetery of Soldiers of the 2nd Polish Army, where 3,420 soldiers who fell in spring 1945 while crossing the Lusatian Neisse on their way to Dresden and Mělník in Czechia lie in 3,392 graves.

On 29 August, Marshal Cezary Przybylski and Mayor Rafał Gronicz signed an agreement on co-financing the thermal modernisation of the building with funds from the Lower Silesian Regional Operational Programme for 2007–2013.

Previously, the old roof covering had been removed from the buildings, and the exposed roof surface had been washed with an algaecidal preparation and primed twice. The work also included dismantling and rebuilding the lightning-protection system, ventilators and exhaust pipes, as well as replacing downpipes, gutters and sheet-metal flashings.
Thermal modernisation of Primary School No. 3 began in 2010 with renovation of the main building’s façade. At that time, 139 window sills, the lightning-protection system, downpipes and two windows were replaced, and the walls of the main building were insulated. The second stage of thermal modernisation, carried out a year later, covered the main building’s roof and involved replacing gutters and sheet-metal flashings and laying a pantile roof covering.
