The guests met in the Municipal Council chamber with deputy mayor Dorota Purgal, Andrzej Niedzielenka, director of the Copper Museum, and Zbigniew Brzeziński, president of the Liegnitz.pl Historical Foundation.
Former residents of Lower Silesia have been coming to our country for years. In addition to visiting various towns, they meet new people and local government officials. Legnica was one of the places they visited. The guests were interested in the structure of local government, the city’s development, residents’ lives and also—as befits the country of world champions—our local football.
“For many generations of Legnica residents, this has been our special place on earth,” said Dorota Purgal. “We cherish the city’s traditions and history. We greatly value our cooperation with our partner city, Wuppertal. The Wuppertal Society of Friends of Legnica has been supporting disabled children and young people in our city for years.”
Zbigniew Brzeziński recalled that the Liegnitz.pl portal collects and publishes materials concerning Legnica and its residents from before 1945. Soon, the foundation will open a lapidarium at the Municipal Cemetery, where surviving gravestones of former Legnica residents have been collected.
The German guests were pleased with the meeting. “Thank you for the warm welcome,” said Peter Winkler. “I feel at home in Legnica, even though I have not lived here for more than 60 years.”
