Let us recall: following the dismissal of Adam Fornal, the longtime president of the Bolesławiec branch of the Polish Red Cross (which took place at the end of May this year), Zbigniew Herbut became the new head of the organization. He is a teacher at the Henryk Sucharski Secondary and Vocational School Complex in Bolesławiec, as well as one of the organizers and coordinators of the exceptional Szpikolada campaign and the recipient of the 2012 Volunteer of the Year title for Bolesławiec County.

“I have a year ahead of me. At present, I am learning new things, listening to PCK employees and gradually planning further initiatives,” the newly elected head of the Red Cross in Bolesławiec says in an interview with “ii”. “I want our organization to take part in every major cultural and outdoor event in our city.”

In October, during the Red Cross campaign to fight hunger, the first edition of the Run for Bread is scheduled to take place. “I would also love to see the return of an event summarizing the year of volunteering in our city,” Zbigniew Herbut reveals.

The plans also include expanding the network of Squirrel Clubs and organizing celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the PCK in Bolesławiec. “I would like a film to be made on this occasion about Stanisław Jędruszka, the still-living founder of the first School PCK Club in Bolesławiec. He is a wonderful man,” emphasizes the head of the Bolesławiec PCK.

Zbigniew Herbut has not forgotten about Szpikolada either, a bone marrow donor registration campaign: “In Bolesławiec, we have 1,700 registered people and we will probably soon have another donor. That will be the sixth person. DKMS Poland Foundation jokes that Bolesławiec has a lucky hand.”

Another initiative Zbigniew Herbut would like to carry out is a support center for older people. “This is not my idea,” the head of PCK stresses immediately. “One senior once told me that he would be glad if someone called him once a day to check whether everything was all right. He told me that he was very afraid he would lie alone at home for a long time after he died. Fortunately, this did not happen to him, because he had very good neighbors.”

“There is an old Polish Red Cross principle that positions on the board are entrusted to leaders who are expected to inspire society to follow them. I hope that will be the case for me,” Zbigniew Herbut adds.
