For the third time in its history, the Bolesławiec Museum of Ceramics received the Sibyl award (known as the Oscars of the museum world), an honor awarded in the nationwide Museum Event of the Year competition organized by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
A total of 250 projects were submitted for this year’s competition. The Bolesławiec museum was among the distinguished group of 27 winners, alongside Poland’s largest National Museums in Kraków, Warsaw, Wrocław, Szczecin and Poznań. Only three institutions from Lower Silesia received awards: two in Wrocław—the National Museum and the Museum of Architecture—and the Bolesławiec Museum of Ceramics.
The distinction is all the more valuable because it was awarded in the “research project” category. Carried out from 2010 to 2013, the “Research on Bolesławiec Ceramics” program significantly expanded knowledge about local stoneware and shed new light on the subject. The results of work conducted since 2010 in cooperation with 57 museums, archives and libraries in Poland and Germany, as well as Italy, Belgium and Austria, were published in two Polish-German catalogues of more than 350 pages and presented in exhibitions: two in Bolesławiec and one in Görlitz.
The award ceremony took place on May 14, 2014, at the King Jan III Museum in Wilanów. Anna Bober-Tubaj, director of the Museum of Ceramics, and its staff accepted the award from Deputy Minister of Culture and National Heritage Prof. Małgorzata Omilanowska, PhD.Małgorzata Omilanowska, director of the National Institute for Museums and Public Collections Dr. Piotr Majewski, Piotr Majewski, and the chair of the jury for the “Sibyl 2013” Museum Event of the Year competition, Prof. Waldemar Baraniewski, PhD.Waldemar Baraniewski.
The jury awarded the Grand Prix of the competition’s 34th edition to Wawel Royal Castle. Wawel. The Bolesławiec Museum was the smallest institution among the distinguished group of winners.
