The project began on April 15. The first school to take part in a lecture combined with games was the Primary School in Kruszyn. First, students in grades I–III answered questions from Stefan Łucki, deputy inspector for municipal waste management. They named the colors of the containers into which sorted waste should be placed, discussed what to do with broken toys and why rubbish should not be thrown in places not intended for it. Through a game in which they had to put waste into the appropriate bins, they were reminded that plastics and paper packaging should first be folded or crushed so they take up as little space as possible. The most active participants received small gifts.

Next, students in grades IV–VI took part in the activities. They faced a more difficult task. After a brief introduction, they had to solve an environmental crossword. As it turned out, it was not as easy as initially thought. Nevertheless, our students managed to solve it.

The meeting with Stefanem Łuckim was also a unique opportunity to clear up all the students’ doubts concerning waste management at the school in Kruszyn. The children now know what to do with spoiled food, why batteries should be removed before throwing away a toy, and how to dispose of… a piano. The municipal employee also explained how used tires are used in road construction and that a battery buried in the ground causes the plants growing there to die. He also brought special sorting bins to the school. After this meeting, we are certain that they will contain only the waste that belongs there.

On April 24, the children will test their newly acquired knowledge in practice, as an event celebrating Earth Day has been planned for that day. We invite children and their parents, as well as the residents of Kruszyn, to clean up our local area together.
