This year’s edition of Szpikolada has come to an end. Thanks to this exceptional campaign, approximately 1,000 potential donors have registered in our county (around 500 people registered this year). On Saturday, April 12, as part of Szpikolada, the First Run for Bone Marrow was held, with approximately 130 people taking part, including Bolesławiec County governor Dariusz Kwaśniewski.
The campaign’s third edition was also important because a bone marrow donor is still being sought for Kuba Legieżyński. On Saturday, a charity concert for Kuba was held in the sports hall of the Henryk Sucharski Upper-Secondary and Vocational School Complex in Bolesławiec. Performers included dancers from Mały Bolesławiec (the Youth Cultural Centre), an oriental dance group from the University of the Third Age, a capoeira group, children from Municipal Public Preschool No. 7 and MPP No. 4, Agata Wagner, the UTA choir conducted by Dorota Straburzyńska, and GZPiT Jutrzenka. We will return to this topic.
Zbigniew Herbut, one of the organizers and coordinators of Szpikolada, on a myth surrounding bone marrow transplantation (statement from a year ago):
A bone marrow donor can be a person who is:
- between 18 and 50 years of age
- responsible and aware that they may be asked to donate bone marrow even several decades after registration
- healthy, who has not suffered from cancer, hematological or immunological diseases, and is not a carrier of HIV, HBs or HCV (hepatitis B or C)
- meeting requirements similar to those for blood donors.
During registration, you must have an identity document containing your PESEL number.
The following permanently disqualify a person from donating bone marrow:
- HIV infection (or belonging to a group at increased risk of infection with this virus)
- presence of the HBs antigen, anti-HCV antibodies with the presence of HCV RNA (the presence of Hbc antibodies and a previous hepatitis A infection are acceptable)
- active tuberculosis within the past five years
- diabetes requiring antidiabetic medication
- active asthma requiring medication (if the candidate has not had an asthma attack in the past five years and is not taking medication, they may qualify).
