For several years, in connection with World Food and Hunger Day, observed on October 16, the Polish Red Cross has been conducting a nationwide campaign to combat hunger. Its aim is to raise funds to provide food for the poorest children and homeless people in our country, with particular emphasis on regions affected by high unemployment and the growing impoverishment of society. The second, equally important challenge is to make Poland’s residents aware that hunger is a phenomenon occurring not only in third-world countries or areas affected by armed conflicts, but also in Polish homes.

As part of the Campaign Against Hunger, volunteers and employees of the Polish Red Cross conduct collections and gather in-kind donations intended for this purpose. The sale of bread collected earlier is very popular and, consequently, brings tangible financial results. It is also significant that the Polish Red Cross is the first organization in this part of Europe to conduct such wide-ranging activities in connection with widespread poverty and deprivation. Thanks to the efforts of the PCK, 12 countries from the Central European region joined the campaign, which thus became an international campaign.

As part of this year’s Campaign Against Hunger, the activities of the Polish Red Cross will be conducted throughout the country, including in Bolesławiec:

  • October 11–12 – school students and volunteers will collect donations in the streets of our town
  • October 12, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. – food collected will be distributed in the Market Square (hot pea soup, pierogi, bread, and cake).

All funds raised as part of the Campaign will be donated by the PCK to subsidize lunches in school cafeterias and to the PCK Homeless Shelter in Bolesławiec.
