At precisely 2:30 p.m., Rev. Romuald Glapa, parish priest of the Parish of St. John of Nepomuk in Żeliszów, consecrated the obelisk bearing the insignia of the former Duchy of Żagań, with two deer antlers, as well as a plaque reading “Faithful to our roots. Devoted to our homeland. Open to the world.”
Ryszard Kaprawy, a member of the Municipal Council and the initiator of the monument, briefly presented the history of the obelisk. The ceremonial unveiling was carried out by Bolesławiec Municipality head Andrzej Dutkowski, Ryszard Kaprawy and Żeliszów village head Olga Burdyna.
All those gathered then went to the square in front of the Community Hall, where the Cabbage Festival began. The Żeliszów village head announced a competition for the tastiest cabbage dish. The jury (comprising Janina Piestrak-Babijczuk, deputy chair of the Bolesławiec City Council, Andrzej Dutkowski and Franciszek Popek, treasurer of Bolesławiec Municipality) faced a difficult task. Ultimately, the dish prepared by the Housewives’ Association in Łaziska won, ahead of the dish from Dobra (second place) and those from Kierżno and Tomaszów Bolesławiecki (third place).
There were also artistic performances. The stage featured students from the Primary School in Żeliszów, the “Żeliszów” Singing Ensemble (twice), the Niespodzianka and Karkonosze groups, as well as the band of Cezary Byrski (consisting of Cezary Byrski, Wojciech Tobiasz, Remigiusz Juźba and Katarzyna Tobiasz).
The most spectacular part of the entire festival, however, was the cabbage-pickling demonstration, in which the municipality head and his deputy, Roman Jaworski, took part. The event ended with a dance party.
