On Wednesday, 21 August, at 5:00 p.m., a meeting with the artist Ryszard Kosche will be held at the Format Gallery. The painter was born in 1959. He has lived outside Poland for many years, including the past seven in the United Kingdom. Painting is his lifelong passion. He has exhibited his works, among other places, at the famous Rich Mix centre in London. Now he is presenting them in his hometown.
The artist writes about his Bolesławiec roots and developing his talent:
“... everything began in Bolesławiec, at primary school, where my still-childlike creative work was noticed by teachers who believed that I was very talented in painting.I was active in Bolesławiec cultural centres; my works were sent to international art competitions, and everything seemed to be going quite well. But talent is one thing, while life is sometimes something completely different. Talent does not protect one from adversity, and the sensitivity associated with it can cause life to press a person down to the ground for many years.
That is exactly what happened to me, but eventually, after years, I psychologically bounced back from rock bottom and began to live again. An explosion of emotions made me try to paint everything that lies within me, everything I feel and see, as if a broken dam had finally allowed my inner passions and needs to be released.
My paintings are difficult to categorise. They are highly energising and colourful, although I do not think they are filled with joy alone. They also contain the other side, which is not always visible at first glance: a little night and a little sadness, after all, they tell stories about life and, in a sense, are its reflection.
Only human beings are capable of expressing aesthetic feelings. “A person is creative when they do not limit themselves to stating, repeating or imitating, when they give something of themselves, from themselves,” as Tatarkiewicz wrote in “The History of Six Ideas”; and this very definition of creativity is very close to me ...”
