A few minutes after 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, Maciek Maleńczuk, the leader of the band Pudelsi, appeared on stage, wearing his characteristic dark glasses and possessing distinctive vocal abilities. After the concert, the group spent a long time signing posters brought by fans. Tomasz Gąsiorowski spoke with the band’s leader.

B.org: Congratulations on a successful concert. How do you rate the Bolesławiec audience?
Maciek Maleńczuk: I liked the audience. I also liked the fact that the emcee kept calling on people to come closer to the stage and nobody did, but when we appeared on stage, they came forward on their own. They did not need to be called.

B.org: Where do you get ideas for songs?
Maciek Maleńczuk: From my head (laughs). These are songs written together. Someone blurts out something silly (as in the case of “kocham się”), and a song is built around it. We usually write the lyrics together with Pudel. He comes up with a verse, and I make the chorus for it. It is not the typical kind of work driven by inspiration, but rather based on an idea.

B.org: Where did the idea for the band’s name come from?
Maciek Maleńczuk: It was meant to be spiteful. Because Pudel wanted to continue Düpą, we replied that the most he could produce would be Pudelsi.

B.org: Besides Pudelsi, you also appear in the band Homo Twist.
Maciek Maleńczuk: The band was founded out of a heartfelt need and a need to play heavy music. As a child, I listened to Led Zeppelin and Black Sabath. As a young man, I always dreamed of playing that kind of music. On the other hand, I listened to jazz all my life. It was clear, however, that I would not become a jazz musician. Lacking the technique to create jazz, I decided to fulfill my childhood dream and start a band that played heavy music.

B.org: Please also tell us about the latest album.
Maciek Maleńczuk: The new album is on hold because I am recording with Homo Twist.

B.org: People say you are a Man of Three Faces. Where does that term come from?
Maciek Maleńczuk: That is the minimum (laughs). Sometimes there are even more faces. I simply have many artistic incarnations: I act in the theater, write poetry, and am a vocalist and guitarist. In short, I sing, dance, and babysit children.

B.org: Nearly two years after the band’s reunion, news spread throughout Poland that Pudelsi were breaking up again.
Maciek Maleńczuk: At the moment, I am taking a break from Pudelsi. I play concerts, but I do not want to go to the studio. I want to keep my head clear for Homo Twist, and Pudelsi have to understand that.

B.org: And one last short question. You were a judge on Idol, and quite a harsh one. Are you like that in everyday life, or was it mainly for the purposes of the program?
Maciek Maleńczuk: (laughs) I am like that every day.
