We have reported many times on the activities of history enthusiasts from the Janusz Korczak II General Secondary School in Bolesławiec. Last November was the Month of National Remembrance and Patriotism. In December, the school hosted a debate on martial law, attended by Ryszard Łoś, Antonina Zenona Dutkowska and Zbigniew Razik, activists of NSZZ “Solidarity.” In January, the school’s students commemorated the 150th anniversary of the outbreak of the January Uprising. Meanwhile, March was devoted to commemorating the Cursed Soldiers.
The historical project culminated in a debate commemorating the soldiers of the anti-communist underground. “We wanted to familiarize students with the profiles of the Cursed Soldiers,” said Barbara Sykulska, a history teacher. “We should thank them for the fact that Poland is now a free, sovereign and independent state. Glory to their memory.”
Anna Szweda, Paulina Szurgot and Magdalena Brzana defended the Cursed Soldiers. For the purposes of the debate, Rafał Sapeta, Marcin Czarnecki and Krystian Fecyk defended the communists’ position. “It was quite a challenge,” Krystian emphasized. “But in my opinion, the debate was successful. Importantly, the listeners were also active. What stayed with me most was Kacper Jędrzejewski’s statement, in which he spoke in defense of the Cursed Soldiers.”
The project was summarized in April. Its main coordinator, Martyna Mularczyk, is taking her school-leaving exams this year, but she has already announced that she will continue supporting the activities of the history team at II LO. “We certainly deepened our knowledge over the course of this year,” said Krystian Fecyk. “But another thing is more important: thanks to our activities, we inspired others to want to learn about the history of our ancestors and our country.”
“I am glad that this school has so many history enthusiasts who can develop their interests under the supervision of Ms Barbara Sykulska,” noted Mirosław Sakowski, headmaster of II LO. He then addressed the students: “Thank you for this initiative. You are the beating heart of this school.”
Another historical project at II LO will begin next school year.
