The first edition of the Solidarity Olympiad, organised by the Solidarity Centre Foundation and the Professor Bronisław Geremek Centre Foundation, is under way. In the regional stage of the competition, Przemysław Pawłowski from II General Secondary School in Bolesławiec came third and, together with two girls from Wrocław, qualified for the national stage.

“He is a Renaissance man. He reads widely and has tremendous knowledge,” says Anna Lisiak, a history teacher, about Przemysław Pawłowski. It is worth adding that the winner of the Lower Silesian stage of the history olympiad attends a... biology and chemistry class and plans to pursue a future in biology or biotechnology. Moreover, the secondary-school student has also advanced to the regional stage of the Ecology Knowledge Olympiad. “I am very pleased with Przemysław’s successes,” emphasises Mirosław Sakowski, headmaster of II LO. “He is the first candidate for the Parents’ Council scholarship, which we will award from the new school year.”

In April, the three winners of the Lower Silesian stage will travel to Gdańsk, where they will have the opportunity to meet activists of the Independent Self-Governing Trade Union “Solidarity”. The competition final will take place on 4 June—the anniversary of the historic 1989 elections, in which “S” achieved a landslide victory.

The patrons of the olympiad are the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and the Minister of National Education. Lech Wałęsa has assumed honorary patronage over the competition. More information can be found on the Solidarity Olympiad website.
