The fire was noticed on Sunday at around 5:00 p.m. The building’s roof was burning. The operation was difficult because the fire had spread to the wooden ceilings. Three freestanding chimneys posed a threat. If they collapsed, they could have brought down the entire building. “It was a very difficult and dangerous operation, also dangerous to the firefighters’ lives. That is why the work was carried out from outside, using ladders and elevating platforms,” explains Jerzy Kieler, the deputy commander of the County Fire Service, who led the operation. After midnight on Monday, firefighters were extinguishing the fire in the wooden ceiling separating the attic from the third floor. Later, they removed the remains of the ceiling on the top floor. They also extinguished individual sources of fire.
From the early morning hours, firefighters assisted the residents of the tenement and helped them carry out the surviving belongings. The firefighting operation ended on Monday at around 10:00 a.m. Sixteen families, nearly 40 people, lost the roof over their heads.
At noon, cleanup of the fire site began. A construction crew entered the tenement grounds, followed by soldiers from the Bolesławiec Military Unit. For the rest of the day, the surviving belongings were carried out and transported to temporary premises. Many people accepted the hospitality of family and friends.
Those affected will receive advances of PLN 100 and PLN 200 per person. “The upper floors will be evacuated. People will be offered new apartments. Tenants who lived on the lower floors will receive temporary accommodation,” says Karol Stasik, deputy mayor of Bolesławiec. It is already known that the tenement will be renovated.
