In the mathematics section of the Lower Silesian Pre-Matura Competition, organized, among others, by the Wrocław School of Business, 2,500 people took part. Seven students from the Janusz Korczak 2nd General Secondary School in Bolesławiec advanced to the voivodeship final. Two of them – Rafał Ryżewski and Jędrzej Janczewski – secured places on the podium. Rafał proved to be the best in the second-year category at basic level, while Jędrzej took third place in the first-year category at advanced level.

Although both laureates plan to study medicine, they intend to take mathematics at advanced level in their matura exams. “The more deeply I explore this field, the more I realize that it is becoming increasingly difficult and, therefore, increasingly beautiful,” says Jędrzej. “It is a great subject that develops thinking exceptionally well.”

According to teacher Dorota Kurowska, the success of both secondary-school students is no coincidence. “II LO lives and breathes mathematics,” says Kurowska. “We study this field not only in lessons; all our students also have the opportunity to take part in mathematics competitions.”

Several dozen students from the school took part in the Bolesławiec Mathematics Competition and the international online MMC competition; in the latter, six II LO students advanced to the final. Around 130 students entered the Oxford competition and the Mathematics Championships project.

“If anyone is considering choosing a school, they can be sure that at II LO we devote time and attention not only to Olympiad contestants,” the mathematics teacher emphasizes. “Anyone who wants to participate in mathematics competitions has that opportunity. You can genuinely develop your skills here; all it takes is willingness.”

Rafał’s teacher is Beata Mosorka, while Jędrzej is a student of Dorota Kurowska.
