The lecture, entitled “Cancer – a Social Disease of the 21st Century,” took place on January 26 in the auditorium of Miejski Zespół Szkół nr 2 (ul. Jana Pawła II). The talk was delivered by Marek Pudełko, MD, PhD, an oncologist. – Some people compare cancer to atherosclerosis, diabetes, hypertension and chronic kidney disease, he said. – The difference is that cancer detected early enough can be cured. If it is only a primary tumor, removing it guarantees a 100 percent cure. That is what makes this disease exceptional.
The oncologist also spoke about, among other things, the cancers most commonly affecting men and those most commonly affecting women. He emphasized that the cancer cure rate in Lower Silesia does not differ from the European average. – Once a year, you need to take care of yourself and get examined, he added.
Several dozen people attended the lecture. The event was organized by the Council of Students of the University of the Third Age in Bolesławiec, which operates in association with the Wrocław University of Economics.
