The Independence Day ceremony at the II General Secondary School in Bolesławiec began with an assembly prepared by class II d under the direction of teacher Anna Słaboń. Then everyone gathered in the school auditorium had the opportunity to hear a lecture by Łukasz Sołtysik, an employee of the Wrocław branch of the Institute of National Remembrance and co-author of the book “An Outline of the History of the Independent Self-Governing Trade Union ‘Solidarity’ in Bolesławiec 1980–1989.” The lecture was titled “The Struggle for an Independent Poland in 1980–89.”
The ceremony concluded with the opening of an exhibition devoted to “S” activists from Bolesławiec and the surrounding area. “These are people who fought for an independent Poland in our town and county,” said Mirosław Sakowski, principal of II LO. “It is worth adding that this exhibition would never have reached us without the efforts of Ms Barbara Sykulska, a history teacher.”
“At the end of 2009, historical research was initiated with the aim of documenting and describing the activities of Bolesławiec’s ‘Solidarity,’” Łukasz Sołtysik said during the exhibition opening. “We managed to collect many accounts and documents, thanks to which this exhibition was created. It presents the profiles of people who defended the ideals of ‘S.’ They deserve our thanks and remembrance.
