Students at Bolesławiec schools choose the teachers they like best

Students from secondary schools run by Bolesławiec County are choosing not the best, but their favourite teacher. It is an idea proposed by the students themselves, who want to recognise teachers for their daily work, support and commitment – reports Katarzyna Zięba, Head of the Education, Culture and Sport Department of the Bolesławiec County Office.

“The initiative came from the students,” says Katarzyna Zięba. “They wanted to choose not the best teacher, but their favourite one. It is not about being the best, because all our teachers are the best. Rather, it is about being the favourite of all the students – someone who supports and appreciates them, devotes more and more time to them and takes care of their students,” adds the head of the education department at the county office.

The selective voting system at II LO

The poll is being held at all seven secondary schools. Each school decides for itself how to collect the votes. At the Janusz Korczak II General Secondary School in Bolesławiec, the students opted for a considerably more modern and technological solution – and one of them was responsible for preparing it.

The electronic voting system was created by Wojtek, a fourth-year student specialising in cybersecurity and modern information technologies. As he explains, he designed the entire mechanism from scratch.

“I created a system for voting at school for a favourite teacher. It works in such a way that each student draws a unique password from a pool and scans a QR code that takes them to a website where they have to enter the password they drew. After confirming it, a list of teachers appears, from which one person can be selected and a vote cast,” Wojtek explains.

Wojtek emphasises that his solution not only makes voting easier, but also allows the results to be monitored on an ongoing basis.

“The result is actually known in real time, so we do not have to count the ballots by hand. We can also immediately see the turnout and the number of students who have already voted. Such a system speeds up the entire process and could be used, for example, in future student council elections,” he adds.

The names of the teachers chosen by the students will be announced on 13 October during the National Education Day gala at the Old Theatre in Bolesławiec.
