During the session of the Bolesławiec City Council held on September 28, councilors unanimously adopted a resolution approving the local spatial development plan for the area on Starzyńskiego Street. For neighborhood residents, this means one thing: a grocery discount store will be built there—something they have been campaigning for a long time (the resolution was initiated by them, and they collected nearly 500 signatures on the matter).

A new tender is to be announced later this year; the previous one was canceled. The reason? “The Mayor decided to tighten the local plan’s criteria,” explained Piotr Żak, the city architect, during the City Council session. “Instead of 25%, we included in the plan a requirement that at least 40% of the sales area be allocated to food products.”

Thanks to this, Żak explained, a typical grocery market—not an electronics or household-appliance store—will be built on Starzyńskiego Street. “We were concerned that someone might buy the plot and develop it differently from what we would have wanted,” emphasized Mayor Piotr Roman. “We tightened the criteria so that the dream of the residents of the Starzyńskiego neighborhood could come true. They told me they felt disadvantaged compared with residents of Tysiąclecia Avenue and Jana Pawła II Street, where there are plenty of markets.”
