The intervention followed a report forwarded by the operator of the 112 emergency number. The information indicated that the 25-year-old had threatened to kill his mother and used violence against her. When police officers arrived at the scene, the suspect was no longer in the apartment.
The man was detained several hours later by a patrol from the Prevention Department of the District Police Headquarters in Lubin. During his escape, he abandoned a backpack in which officers found and secured a machete 58 centimeters long.
Investigators from the Criminal Investigation Department charged the 25-year-old with physical and psychological abuse of his mother and making criminal threats against her. Police determined that the acts of violence had allegedly been taking place for several years. According to the officers’ findings, the woman had repeatedly given her son a chance to change his behavior, but over time he allegedly became increasingly aggressive.
Police emphasize that the turning point was the threats to take her life using a dangerous tool. At that point, the Lubin resident decided to ask officers for help.
For the victim’s safety, police officers asked the District Prosecutor’s Office in Lubin to seek temporary detention for the suspect. The court granted the request and decided to hold the 25-year-old in custody for two months.
The suspect had previously been known to police. Abuse of a close family member carries a sentence of up to five years in prison.
On this occasion, police officers once again appeal to people experiencing domestic violence not to face the problem alone and to report such situations to the appropriate services. Officers also urge witnesses of violence—neighbors, friends or family members—to respond and report the danger. In situations requiring immediate intervention, call the 112 emergency number.
