She reported to the District Police Headquarters in Złotoryja that she had been targeted in a scam using the “bank employee” method. According to the information provided, she received a call from a man claiming to be a bank consultant.
The caller convinced her that her account required urgent protection and that she therefore needed to install an application enabling remote access to her phone. Acting under time pressure and worried about the security of her money, the woman followed the instructions and installed the indicated software.
That was not the end of it. The fake consultant also persuaded her to provide her electronic banking login details. Fortunately, at that moment the resident of Złotoryja County began to suspect that she might be dealing with a scam.
She immediately ended the call, contacted her bank directly and blocked access to her account. Thanks to her quick reaction, the criminals did not have time to take her money.
Police warn of increasingly frequent scams
Officers remind the public that criminals are increasingly impersonating bank employees. During phone calls, they use time pressure, report an alleged threat to funds in the account and try to persuade callers to follow further instructions.
Police emphasize that genuine bank employees never ask customers to install programs for remotely operating devices, such as AnyDesk, TeamViewer or other similar applications. They also never require customers to provide logins, passwords, authorization codes or electronic banking login details.
How can you protect yourself from scammers?
Officers remind the public of several basic safety rules:
- do not install remote-access applications at the request of a caller,
- never provide logins, passwords or authorization codes for electronic banking,
- if a call raises any doubts, hang up immediately and contact the bank yourself using its official telephone number,
- if you suspect fraud or an attempted scam, notify the Police as soon as possible.
Police officers emphasize that vigilance and limited trust toward strangers are the most effective protection against this type of crime. A quick reaction, as in the case of the resident of Złotoryja County, can prevent the loss of savings and stop further scams.
