One of the most important road projects carried out in the region in recent years has been completed. The newly opened bridge in Lwówek Śląski has taken over vehicle traffic that previously crossed the historic bridge dating from the end of the 18th century.
The previous bridge, built in 1792 and rebuilt in the 19th and early 20th centuries, served for decades as a key connection across the Bóbr. However, its technical condition had long raised growing concerns. Expert assessments pointed to the progressing deterioration of the structure—from losses in the stonework and weakened vaults to the erosion of the piers and deformations of the road surface.
Specialists assessed that continuing to allow full vehicle traffic could pose a threat both to users and to the historic structure itself. In response, a solution was prepared involving the construction of a new crossing while simultaneously securing the historic bridge.
Information about the opening of the new structure was shared yesterday on social media by Andrzej Kredkowski, a regional councillor. According to the local government official, the investment cost approximately PLN 22 million.
Initially, traffic will be managed in alternating directions. At the same time, the former route will be closed to cars to allow work on the historic crossing to begin.
The plan is to restore the historic bridge’s full technical and historical value. Once modernization is complete, the structure is to be handed over to the local government and given a new function—without the burden of intensive vehicle traffic.
The opening of the new bridge therefore means not only a change for drivers, but also the beginning of a new chapter in the history of one of the oldest crossings over the Bóbr in the region.
