The incident took place on February 10, 2026, in Legnica. The man published on a social media platform a video showing the course of a police intervention, in which a uniformed officer of the Municipal Police Headquarters in Legnica was visible.
The mere act of recording events in a public space does not, however, mean complete freedom when publishing the material later. In this case, the problem was not only the circumstances in which the recording was posted, but above all the content included in the comment accompanying the video.
Insulting Comments About the Police Officer
Under the published recording, the man posted an entry containing vulgar words commonly regarded as offensive. At the same time, he accused the officer of improper conduct, which—as indicated during the proceedings—could expose the police officer to a loss of the trust necessary to perform official duties and humiliate him in the eyes of the public.
The case was referred to court. After analyzing the collected evidence, the court found the defendant guilty of the offense with which he had been charged.
Financial Penalty for an Online Post
The court sentenced the resident of Legnica to a fine of 1,500 zlotys.
The court additionally ordered him to pay 1,000 zlotys in compensation to the injured police officer.
The Legnica police headquarters emphasizes that the actions of the prosecutor conducting the proceedings played an important role in the case. According to the officers, the prosecutor sought to clarify all the circumstances of the incident and represented the public interest before the court. The evidence collected made it possible to demonstrate the defendant’s liability and led to the issuance of a conviction.
Police Remind the Public About Online Liability
The services point out that publishing material depicting officers and making accusations against them online may entail legal consequences.
A public official performing their duties enjoys special legal protection; at the same time, like every citizen, they have the right to protection of their image and personal rights.
Cases involving the insulting or defamation of officers, including through social media, are analyzed individually each time. People who publish content that violates the law must reckon with the possibility of facing liability before a court.
