Why do parked cars catch fire?
The most common scenarios include:
- Electrical system short circuit – even in a parked car, some circuits remain energized. A damaged wire, moisture or an installation defect can lead to ignition.
- Battery failure – a damaged or worn battery can overheat and, in extreme cases, cause a fire. This applies to both combustion-engine and electric cars.
- A fault following an earlier journey – if the car had been used earlier, the fire could have developed with a delay, for example as a result of overheated engine-compartment components.
- Rodent activity – chewed electrical wires are a common cause of short circuits, especially in cars that are used less frequently.
- Work on the vehicle – charging the battery, electrical repairs, using a battery charger or welding near the car can increase the risk of fire.
- Arson – is always considered one of the possibilities, especially when there is no obvious technical cause.
- External factors – for example, a carelessly discarded ember, hot ash, a grill located close to the vehicle or a fire involving another object standing nearby.
