On Tuesday, two serious accidents involving cyclists occurred in the same municipality – the Nowogrodziec municipality. In both cases, the injured people required immediate medical assistance, and LPR helicopters were called to the scene. First, a 12-year-old boy was injured, followed later by an adult man.
12-year-old cyclist rode out in front of a car
The first incident occurred on Tuesday, April 21, in the afternoon, in Wykroty. According to the preliminary findings, the 12-year-old cyclist rode out from a minor road directly in front of an oncoming car.
Emergency services were dispatched to the scene immediately. Because of the child’s condition (a head injury), an LPR helicopter was sent and transported the boy to a hospital in Legnica.
Another cyclist accident several hours later
Later that same day, after 4:00 p.m., another serious incident occurred. In the village of Nowa Wieś, a cyclist from Bolesławiec hit the back of a truck that had stopped before a railway crossing.
The man sustained injuries requiring urgent medical assistance. In this case too, an LPR helicopter had to be called, and it transported the injured man to a hospital in Wrocław.
The start of the cycling season and an appeal for caution
With the arrival of spring, more and more cyclists and scooter users are appearing on the roads. This is a period when caution is especially important on the part of both drivers and vulnerable road users.
Particular care should be taken in the vicinity of intersections, railway crossings and minor roads. A moment of inattention can lead to very serious consequences.
What is worth knowing?
The police routinely appeal to cyclists to make sure it is safe before entering the roadway, signal their manoeuvres and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles. Drivers, meanwhile, should remember that the number of two-wheeled vehicles on the roads rises quickly in spring.
