Hate after comments about the Church: “It was very difficult for me”
The conversation with Natalia Kukulska began with musical topics, but turned to one of the most personal subjects: her attitude toward the Church and the reactions prompted by the artist’s earlier statement.
“That interview (with Żurnalista in 2022 — editor’s note) was simply incredibly sobering for me, and I was deeply moved by the way my words were received. I did not say that I do not go to church; I only said that I have a problem with the Church as it currently is,” the singer emphasized.
As she says, the reaction from some members of the audience came as a surprise. “The wave of hate that came down on me from very devout Catholics showed me only how much I am afraid of this place and how this place, I feel, nevertheless needs some kind of cleansing and healing,” she added.
The artist admitted that the situation had real emotional consequences for her. “I went through very difficult moments, to the point that when I was doing a concert tour with the TGD band this year, I wondered whether I would be booed as soon as I walked on,” she said candidly.
At the same time, she stressed that she does not reject faith, but views its extreme forms critically.
“This kind of fanaticism causes a lot of harm and, it seems to me, instead of encouraging people, it pushes them away,” she said. She also emphasized that she has had positive experiences with people in the Church: “I have many fantastic friends among priests with whom I discuss things, and who have never judged either my decisions or my views in any way.”
A year of anniversaries and intensive work
In the further part of the conversation, Natalia Kukulska spoke about her current projects. As she noted, 2026 is an exceptional year for her.
“This is an anniversary year for me, because it has been thirty years since my album ‘Światło’ (…) and forty years since my childhood debut. I also turned fifty, so one anniversary follows another,” she said.
Concerts throughout Poland are planned. “I would like these concerts to be a kind of summary, with the repertoire ranging from the beginning to the present (…) I would simply like to include everything in this tour,” Natalia Kukulska added.
The artist is also working on a musical and preparing concerts and special performances.
“Emotions always win”
The conversation also included reflections on music and the stage. Kukulska clearly indicates what matters most to her.
“Without a doubt, emotions always win. Because emotions are the truth. And perfection (…) may always remain unattainable,” she emphasized. As she admits, striving too hard for perfection can produce the opposite effect. “I noticed that the harder I try to achieve perfection, the worse it turns out,” she said.
Difficult moments in her career
The singer also returned to one of the most demanding experiences of her professional life. “I had a vocal injury and had to cancel it before the premiere (…) It was very difficult for me,” she recalled, referring to her participation in the musical “Miss Saigon.” However, she stressed that difficulties are an important part of an artist’s journey. “Challenges teach humility and teach us to take care of our health (…) I believe that many of the things that were difficult were necessary for me.”
Social media “her own way”
The artist also addressed her online presence. As she admitted, she deliberately limits her activity. “I can no longer keep up with new platforms, TikTok. I did not get into it and probably will not,” she said. Instead, she focuses on authenticity: “Most of the posts (…) are posts that I write and edit myself. It is my language. AI does not write for me, nor does someone from management.”
“I would like this joy not to be taken away from me”
At the end of the conversation, Natalia Kukulska admitted what she needs most today. “Everything that is happening now makes me happy, and I would like this joy not to be taken away from me by the drudgery of everyday life,” she concluded.
Natalia Kukulska is in Bolesławiec for the National Festival of Youth Vocal Ensembles “WIELOGŁOSY”. The competition is being held at the Old Theatre of the Youth Cultural Centre.15 April at 6:00 p.m.The final concert will take place, during which the jury’s verdict will be announced. Admission to the concert is free.
“Year after year, we try to make the educational activities of ‘Wielogłosy’ more attractive,” says Dariusz Uściński, director of the Youth Cultural Centre in Bolesławiec and organizer of the event. “During the two days of the festival, apart from the competition, we organize exceptional vocal workshops. Year after year, they are led by members of the jury, experienced people recognized in the music world. We had Tomek Szczepanik from the band Pectus, and now we have Natalia Kukulska; together with Natalia, Agnieszka Musiał will conduct music consultations. She is a jazz vocalist originally from Bolesławiec, whom we hosted at one of the concerts during the Ceramics Festival,” the director added.
