If you liked the illuminated butterflies, two tulips, the egg-shaped swing, the photo frame and three glittering rabbits, you may also like the price at which they were rented… You spent 72 849.92 gross złotys on these festive trinkets.
If you thought that was not so much, after all, Easter comes only once a year, then for 33 210 gross złotys you also bought the exceptional Passion concert “The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross” by Joseph Haydn. The concert took place in the church at Castle Square on Tuesday, 31 March, at 7:00 p.m., so that after returning from work—someone has to work so that someone else can perform concerts—you could make it in time to take part in this exceptional musical feast.
Why was the concert funded by the money of all taxpayers in Bolesławiec held specifically in the church of Rev. Stanisław Kusik? The director, Kornel Filipowicz, answers that question:
The Passion concert—a kind of evangelical statement by the crucified Jesus Christ—was organised in the church in accordance with the principle that the musical message of the concert should be appropriate to the place where it is performed. The aptness of this relationship should be obvious not only to the faithful, but also to everyone, even an audience member with limited aesthetic sensitivity. By applying a kind of parallel, the intention of the concert’s co-organiser, BOK-MCC, may be regarded as a contemporary realisation of the ancient rule of decorum.
We have two more questions, rhetorical ones:
If the director of the Municipal Housing Management Facility had to decorate the city out of his own pocket, even jointly with the mayor, would he also spend over 72,000 on renting decorations?
If the director of the Bolesławiec Cultural Centre had to host a party at his own home and delight his invited guests with Haydn’s music, would he also pay 27,000 out of his own pocket for such a concert? Even jointly with Mayor Roman?
