Leszek Socha comments on the article The Company of Doctors and Hospital Employees Bought Telewizja Bolesławiec. A Surprising Change of Ownership at the Local Station
The television station, which for years had been associated with the local government and the local community, has changed ownership. The company Medask bought out the municipality’s and the station employees’ shares. Its partners are mainly doctors and employees of St. Łukasz Hospital in Bolesławiec.
“I am surprised that something like a local government owning a television station could have happened at all,” writes Leszek Socha. “All the more so, I cannot imagine what procedures described in medical protocols Telewizja Bolesławiec could be useful to medics for. I have a vision—this is, of course, irony and sarcasm—of a live camera following a gynecological examination, or a journalist-doctor making a report on the course of a prostate examination,” Socha adds
Perhaps the television station is primarily intended to serve as a channel for promoting institutions, people or narratives, rather than as a space for reliable reporting on medicine.
“The media can serve as a propaganda mouthpiece, but for whom and for what?” Socha asks. “Bolesławiec doctors have recently enjoyed an excellent reputation. I have personally experienced their effectiveness and their approach to patients. It has never been this good before. I suspect that some of them are just as surprised as the residents of the county, and are asking themselves: what do we need a television station for? This is where my imagination takes over. Not long ago, President Piotr Roman announced the end of his political career, at least as president, which moved our hearts, including mine. I assume that his attachment to this medium is so great that since he is leaving, perhaps he is taking it with him. And as a consequence, does he intend to begin a career at the hospital, which will soon become a Lower Silesian ‘multi-hospital’?” Leszek Socha asks and encourages everyone to join the discussion.
