The incident occurred on Monday, February 23, in the afternoon. Fire engines and a police patrol appeared at one of the residential buildings on Aleja Tysiąclecia in Bolesławiec.

As it turned out, a soot fire broke out in the building’s chimney flue. Fortunately, no one was injured.

Three fire service units took part in the firefighting operation, including a ladder unit. A police patrol was also at the scene.

⚠️ Beware of chimney soot fires – important information for stove and fireplace users

During the heating season, the risk of soot fires in chimney flues increases significantly. Such incidents most often occur as a result of flammable soot accumulating in the chimney and the improper operation of heating appliances.

🔥 Why do soot fires occur?

  • burning wet wood or low-quality fuel,
  • burning waste, such as plastic or furniture panels,
  • insufficient air supply to the firebox,
  • failure to clean the chimney regularly,
  • a faulty or leaky chimney flue.

When soot ignites, the temperature in the chimney can exceed 1000°C, which may cause the chimney to crack, the installation to lose its seal, or even the entire building to catch fire.

✅ What should you remember?

  1. Regular chimney cleaning
According to regulations, smoke flues must be cleaned at least:
    • 4 times a year – when heating with solid fuel, such as coal or wood,
    • 2 times a year – when heating with gas or oil.
  2. Technical inspection of chimney flues
An inspection by an authorized chimney sweep should be carried out at least once a year.
  3. Use appropriate fuel
Burn only dry, seasoned wood and fuels approved for the particular appliance.
  4. Do not burn waste!
It is not only dangerous but also against the law.
  5. Ensure proper ventilation
Efficient ventilation reduces the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and improves combustion.

🚨 What to do in the event of a soot fire?

  • Do not pour water into the chimney!
  • Close the air supply to the firebox.
  • Call the fire service – emergency number 112 or 998.
  • Leave the building if the situation becomes dangerous.

🔔 For greater safety

It is worth equipping your house or apartment with:

  • a smoke detector – warns of a fire,
  • a carbon monoxide detector – detects the odorless and highly dangerous gas produced by improper combustion.

It is a small expense that can save a life.
