At the beginning of June, we wrote that Municipal Gymnasium No. 3 in Bolesławiec was participating in the nationwide project Geo-consultations, organized by the UNEP/GRID-Warsaw Environmental Information Centre. The aim of the project is to conduct public consultations on a dream investment. The school’s students have their own idea for developing the site of the former Eastern Railway Station. The first option involves building a go-kart track; the second—a ceramics-related open-air museum and an amphitheater. Meanwhile, an amusement park would be built on Tysiąclecia Avenue. The two investments would be connected by a bicycle path ending at Grodziec Castle.

To encourage local-government officials to implement the project, the young people conducted an information campaign: they handed out leaflets and put up posters. Public consultations on the matter took place on Wednesday, June 8, in the GS No. 3 assembly hall. The meeting was attended, among others, by Bolesławiec Deputy Mayor Kornel Filipowicz, Head of the Municipal Office’s Communal Department Grażyna Strzyżewska, City Architect Piotr Żak, Deputy Head of Bolesławiec Rural Municipality Roman Jaworski and Ewa Kulig, head of the Education, Culture and Sport, Public Safety and Fire Protection Committee of the Warta Bolesławiecka Municipal Council.

Whether the project will be carried out is unknown. The local-government officials offered few specifics on the matter. Deputy Mayor Filipowicz said that the project involving young people from GS No. 3 was “right on target.” “I hope that this childlike and youthful imagination will turn into something lasting. I regard this idea with respect and appreciation. If we do not carry it out, you certainly will,” he said. Grażyna Strzyżewska, meanwhile, informed everyone present in the Gymnasium assembly hall that the city authorities had designed 21 km of bicycle paths, although they would run only within Bolesławiec.

The meeting was concluded by Ludmiła Rutka, the school’s headmistress. “I am proud of the students at this school,” she emphasized. “They became very involved in this project and held many discussions with officials. In this way, our students are learning civic attitudes, which—I hope—will pay off in the future. I believe they will be people who want to change the reality they inherit.”
