IBU Para Biathlon World Cup
The international para-biathlon competition in Szklarska Poręba-Jakuszyce is one of the most important events of the winter season for athletes with disabilities who compete in biathlon at a high level.
The Jakuszyce cross-country skiing centre, renowned for its excellent skiing conditions and beautiful, picturesque trails, provides an ideal backdrop for this prestigious event. The competition attracts athletes from various countries, coaches and biathlon enthusiasts, creating an atmosphere of a sporting celebration.
The competition programme includes three key events, each adapted to the needs and abilities of athletes in three classification categories:
Sprint: A short, intense competition in which athletes cover the distance on roller skis or cross-country skis, equipped with an air rifle. Every shot matters for the result, while a fast, accurate throw provides additional time points.
The Sitting category includes athletes competing while seated on sledges or using assistive devices, Standing includes athletes moving in wheelchairs or otherwise competing upright, and Vision Impaired includes athletes with partial or complete loss of sight who compete with the help of guides.
Pursuit sprint: The result of the sprint determines the starting position for the second event. Athletes must demonstrate not only skiing speed, but also effective shooting technique and excellent navigation in difficult conditions. In the Vision Impaired category, guide partners play a key role, helping to identify targets and maintain the pace on the course.
Individual race: The most demanding event in terms of endurance and technique. Athletes face a long distance that tests their strength, shooting accuracy and ability to maintain a steady pace throughout the race. Depending on the category, equipment and movement techniques are adapted to the needs of para-biathletes.
Key values and significance of the competition
Promoting para-biathlon at the highest level, encouraging young athletes to take up the discipline and creating an inclusive community.
Demonstrating the abilities of athletes with various types of disabilities, as well as their determination, training and professional preparation.
Supporting international integration, exchanging experience among coaches, athletes and organisers, and promoting the idea of sport as a tool for overcoming barriers.
